The global studies program serves as model for interdisciplinary work and scholarly collaboration at UCSB. The global Ph.D. emphasis requires students to be admitted to a Ph.D. program in a participating department, successfully complete three graduate-level seminars and one proseminar in the areas of global issues and theory, and include a global focus in the final dissertation.
DOCTORAL EMPHASES. In designing their program of study at UCSB, Ph.D. students may opt to pursue a Doctoral Emphasis in either the Feminist Studies Department or Medieval Studies Program in order to reinforce their area of study within the discipline. Such emphases are “official,” meaning that your Ph.D. transcript will reflect the fact that you have qualified in that Emphasis.
Time limits for doctoral programs are approved by the Graduate Council. In the Geography Department, students have a time limit of 4 years to advance to candidacy and 6 years to complete the Ph.D. degree.It is important to understand that the time-to-degree standards for the Ph.D. are measured from the time a student first begins graduate study at any level in any program at UCSB.
UCSB offers master’s degree and Ph.D. tracks in diverse disciplines, with top programs in engineering, the sciences, social sciences, humanities, education and the arts. Generally, the Graduate Admissions Committee will begin sending out invitations to attend the Department's Graduate Open House in the beginning of February. Applicants placed on the waitlist or who received a denial will be notified in mid-February. Admission offers are extended in the beginning of March and no later than April 1st.

PhD in Statistics and Applied Probability Admission decisions are made by the departmental Graduate Admissions Commitee. Admission to the program is considered based on academic achievement, programmatic fit, and scholarly potential.

Adding the emphasis in Applied Linguistics to my Ph.D. in Luso-Brazilian Literature was one of the best steps I took during my time at UCSB. Language teaching methodology had been one of my main areas of research and teaching, and the Emphasis allowed to significantly expand that interest.
